Abstract
Progress has been made on the installation of an acoustic curtain on the Halifax Line, with support from both Dalhousie and DFO. A pilot line of 37 hydrophone moorings (receivers) at 800m spacing has now been deployed between the coast at Chebucto Head (near Halifax) and the vicinity of Station HL2 (~150m isobath) on the Halifax Line. Early detections of Atlantic salmon from the Gulf of Maine and LaHave River on a shorter version of the pilot line during the period from April-July, 2008, were found to be clustered in both time (mid-June) and space (60-100m isobaths). Monthly mean currents recorded at a nearby mooring suggest that currents opposing the eastward migration are weakest in June, shoreward of the 100m, a fact that may lead to further hypotheses regarding environmental influences on salmon migratory behaviour.
