Abstract:The PrePARED project aims to improve our understanding of predator-prey interactions around offshore wind farms to reduce uncertainty in impact assessments and improve models of seabird, marine mammal, and fish distribution. This collaborative project involves nine organisations and focuses on prey availability (fish) as a key factor in predator distribution around wind farm infrastructure. Between 2022-2025, telemetry studies, using gadoid fish (including Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus)) are being carried out in the Moray Firth. The project focuses on prey distribution, abundance, diversity and biomass investigating "reef effects" caused by offshore wind farms and their potential to support fish biomass aggregation or production. Marine mammal distribution and behaviour is also monitored alongside fish data, assessing how the construction and operation of wind farms and environmental factors influence predator spatial distribution.

Abstract:The purpose of this project was to track the within-estuary and coastal migrations of large, primarily female, Sacramento-San Joaquin striped bass. Our tagging cutoff was set at 30 inches total length to primarily select for female fish and to increase our odds of detecting coastal migrations. In addition to tagging, two acoustic receiver arrays were installed in the Pacific Ocean – one 11 receiver array at Point Reyes and one 11 receiver array at Point San Pedro. Receivers were deployed every 500m from shore on a due West heading to act as gates for migrating fish. Receivers were first deployed in February 2020 and retrieved by November 2021. Some receivers were lost during deployment and only one striped bass was tagged due to COVID and other logistical constraints.

Abstract:The Yolo Bypass has been identified as a high restoration priority. The restoration projects currently being considered are to: 1) improve passage for upstream-migrating fish such as salmon and sturgeon; 2) reduce fish stranding risks for native fishes; and 3) provide rearing habitat for native fishes. However, there are substantial data gaps that must be filled to design and operate restoration plans, develop performance metrics for evaluation of restoration actions, and assess fisheries risks. Our proposed studies will address these data gaps for each of the above restoration actions. Acoustic telemetry studies will use surrogate species to help inform fish passage operations and adaptive management for Yolo Bypass projects that have been completed, are under construction, or being pursued under the California EcoRestore initiative or other similar restoration efforts. The goal is to develop a conceptual model on fish movement in the Yolo Bypass that can be used to inform DWR and Reclamation management strategies. Central Valley fall-run Chinook Salmon ESU will serve as a surrogate to Sacramento River winter-run Chinook Salmon ESU, Central Valley spring-run Chinook Salmon ESU, and Central Valley steelhead DPS. White Sturgeon A. transmontanus will serve as a surrogate species for sDPS of North American Green Sturgeon. The detection data for salmon and sturgeon from both groups will be incorporated into the Post-Construction Evaluation Monitoring Plan. Sturgeon tagging began in 2004, and fall-run Chinook tagging began in 2012.

Abstract:Tagging studies on Feather River Fish Hatchery (FRFH) of salmonid smolts have revealed that they suffer high mortality while emigrating through the lower Feather River (DWR, unpublished). Between 2009 and 2013, acoustic tracking studies on FRFH steelhead smolts estimate an average apparent survival of 40% from release to the mouth of the Feather River. Preliminary acoustic data for spring-run Chinook demonstrate perhaps a more substantial impact—as few as 16% successfully emigrating out of the Feather River. Predation by piscivorous fishes has been shown to be a substantial source of juvenile salmon mortality in other watersheds (Rieman et al. 1991; Beamesderfer et al. 1996; Kreuger et al. 2011). Similarly, we suspect that predation is a major source of mortality for hatchery smolts in the Feather River. In order to evaluate the impact of piscivorous fish on emigrating juvenile salmonids, we are conducting a multi-year predation study on the lower Feather River. In addition to resident piscivorous fishes, such as Sacramento pikeminnow, several Micropterus spp., and channel catfish, the Feather River also has a seasonally abundant population of striped bass. Our specific study objectives include the following: (1) estimate the abundance and relative distribution of striped bass and resident piscivores in the lower Feather River during the hatchery smolt emigration period, (2) quantify predator diets, and (3) use models to estimate the reach specific and total loss of smolts due to fish predation, and (4) compare the results to patterns in estimated reach mortality of smolts.

Abstract:The scope of this research encompasses developing a better understanding of how exposure to different water temperatures affects the survival of adult Chinook Salmon migrating to spawning grounds in the Central Valley of California. How thermal exposure affects the probability of mortality for salmon migrating to spawning grounds, the location and timing of exposure risk, and how additional environmental conditions influence the susceptibility of salmon being negatively impacted by thermal stress are important unanswered questions that will benefit fisheries management. We intend to acoustic tag subadult and adult fall-run Chinook salmon in the ocean in 2022 and 2023 with temperature emitting acoustic tags and track both their upstream migration success, and thermal exposure profile.

Abstract:Currently there is little known about rearing, migratory behavior, and general emigration patterns of juvenile southern Distinct Population Segment (sDPS) North American green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) and white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) within the Lower Sacramento River, Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta), and San Francisco Bay. This data is crucial for improved species management in California’s Central Valley. To better understand emigration, California Department of Fish and Wildlife is undertaking a study to capture up to 100 green sturgeon and 100 white sturgeon annually and tag them with 69 kHz acoustic transmitters. Sampling is conducted by deploying and tending a 300-ft gill net with two-inch mesh. Acoustic transmitters are surgically implanted into the peritoneal cavity; tag size and therefore tag battery life is determined by fish weight and peritoneal cavity size. Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are also implanted in the peritoneal cavity during the surgical procedure. An array of 69 kHz acoustic receivers deployed throughout the lower Sacramento River and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta collects detection data for juvenile sturgeon tagged with unique tag identification numbers. Telemetry data is analyzed to determine movement patterns, rearing habitat utilization, and migratory behavior within the Delta and outmigration to the Pacific Ocean as a function of water year type and juvenile age class.

Abstract:Cownose Rays and juvenile Bull Sharks often occupy similar estuarine habitats despite the rays being potential prey of the sharks. Pamlico Sound, North Carolina hosts a significant but relatively understudied population of Cownose Rays, and juvenile Bull Shark numbers have been increasing in the estuary in association with rising water temperatures. In this project, acoustic telemetry is used to identify movement behavior and key habitat areas within the estuary for both species, and to determine whether these species interact and influence each other's habitat use patterns.

This is the OBIS extraction of the OTN Canada Sable Island Grey Seal Bioprobes project, consisting only of the release tagging metadata. i.e. the locations and dates of tagged animal release. If readers are interested in the full source dataset they should refer to the OTN web site (members.oceantrack.org). Abstract: Objectives are to better understand the ecological function of large marine carnivores in continental-shelf ecosystems, using grey seals as our model species and novel acoustic technology developed for OTN. There are two components: 1) spatial and temporal patterns of prey encounters by a mobile, large marine predator, and 2) predator movements and foraging distribution in relation to fine- and meso- scale seasonal oceanography in eastern Canada. The first study will contribute to science advice on the impact of pinniped predation on the dynamics of prey populations of commercial or conservation importance. The second study seeks to understand the oceanographic features that grey seals may use to condition the way they search the environment for food and in turn predict how climate variability and long-term change may affect upper-trophic level predators and alter their impact on continental shelf ecosystems.
