說明
This is the OBIS extraction of the Ocean Tracking Network and Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Maritimes Conservation Network: St. Anns Bank Marine Protected Area (MPA) Acoustic Tracking Study, consisting of the release tagging metadata, i.e. the location and date when the tagged animal was released, and summarized detection events of tagged individuals. If readers are interested in the source dataset they may also inquire with the project PIs as listed here or on the OTN web site (https://members.oceantrack.org/project?ccode=SABMPA).
Abstract:The St. Anns Bank Marine Protected Area was established in June 2017. In support of the long-term management of this MPA, an ecosystem monitoring program is currently being designed to evaluate performance relative to conservation objectives. Data describing the spatial-temporal patterns of species movement relative to MPA boundaries is essential for evaluating species composition and to gauge the protective capacity of the MPA. In 2015, a snow crab (Chionoceotes opilio) movement monitoring project was established in the St. Anns Bank area, with collaboration between industry, the OTN and DFO (previously projects V2LSCF and ZSC). Acoustic receiver arrays deployed as part of this project provide an opportunity to record the presence of tagged species who reside in, or transit through, the MPA. In particular, acoustic monitoring of tagged focal species (Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), Atlantic striped wolfish (Anarhichas lupus)), Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus), and snow crab inside the MPA and beyond the receiver array, will provide important information for performance evaluation and design. As part of the Maritimes Conservation Network, this tracking study will contribute to understanding species connectivity among sites of conservation interest in the region.

經費來源 | Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is the federal department responsible for safeguarding Canadian waters and for managing fisheries and ocean resources. Marine Conservation Areas (including Marine Protected Areas – MPAs) are regularly monitored towards their ecological and socioeconomic objectives. Funding for baseline research and monitoring for these areas is provided by the Government of Canada and administered through the DFO Aquatic Ecosystems program (https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/ecosystems/index-eng.html). OTN is a research and technology development initiative headquartered at Dalhousie University, in Halifax Nova Scotia. OTN is funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and is grateful to have once received funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). OTN is also grateful for the continued support from Research Nova Scotia, and OTN's host institution, Dalhousie University. |
研究區域描述 | The St. Anns Bank Marine Protected Area (MPA) is located east of Cape Breton Island on the transition between the Scotian Shelf and Laurentian Channel, at the entrance to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The MPA is 4,364 km2 and contains examples of highly natural habitats representing many ecologically and biologically significant features. Activities that disturb, damage or remove living marine organisms or any part of their habitat are actively managed within the MPA. The St. Anns Bank MPA is part of an important migration corridor for fish and marine mammals moving in and out of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and St. Lawrence Estuary. |
研究設計描述 | An array of 48 acoustic receivers are maintained annually within the St. Anns Bank Marine Protected Area (MPA). These receivers span a variety of benthic habitat types within the MPA. They are positioned to help detect species movement to and from the MPA and to detect animals using habitats within the MPA as they move through the migratory corridor between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Atlantic Ocean. |

品質控管 | OTN species names are verified using the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). If species names on new data cannot be verified against (a) known valid names in OTN, and/or (b) WoRMs the Data Provider will be notified so they can check they are correct. Names that cannot be placed after checking with WoRMS are, where possible, placed on the basis of other authoritative sources, such as the Fishbase or ITIS; and once completely verified a request will be sent to WoRMS for addition of the verified species name. http://members.oceantrack.org/data/discovery/byspecies |
方法步驟描述:
- This resource was created by the Ocean Tracking Network Data Centre as a summarized representation of animal presence determined by electronic tagging efforts. Darwin Core (DwC) records were extracted from the OTN database and filtered and summarized according to international agreed-upon standards.
